Sunway University - An Introduction

Sunway University (originally Sunway College) was formed with the belief and understanding that higher education is vital to the progress of the Nation. The institution received an auspicious start in 1987 when it was officially opened by the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah Alhaj, the Sultan of Selangor Darul Ehsan. Within a short span of time, its student numbers outgrew the original premises, leading to the development of a new, purpose-built campus, complete with a comprehensive range of modern academic and residential facilities.

The Campus

Occupying 22 acres of prime land in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, and fully equipped with academic, hostel and sports facilities, our campus is among the largest and most modern of any private institution in Malaysia.

The ground breaking ceremony was held on 9 March 1991, and in December 1992 the institution moved to its new campus. By January 1993, all academic sessions were being conducted there. The grandest moment in the history of Sunway University came on 29 April 1993 when the campus was officially opened by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the 4th Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Sunway University has achieved enviable success in producing students of outstanding calibre. Many have achieved prestigious awards. It is therefore no surprise that Sunway University has received the praise and accolades of VIP visitors, including Malaysian and foreign dignitaries and representatives from overseas institutions and academic partners, and many distinguished professors of international repute who have delivered guest lectures.

The Student Services Department aims to provide a supportive, friendly and challenging environment outside of the classroom for academic success and individual development of the students. There are multiple opportunities available for leadership development, skill enhancement, social interaction, character building and community service activities.

Lecture Theatres and Classrooms

With more than 120 classrooms and 15 lecture theatres, our aim is to provide the best for our students in the places where they will spend most of their time. The acoustically-balanced lecture theatres and comfortable classrooms create an effective learning environment, equipped with a range of other electronic teaching devices.
 

Science Laboratories

Our ultra-modern laboratories are well-equipped with the complete tools and materials for various experiments, especially in the fields of Physics, Biology and Chemistry.
 

Computer & Multimedia Production Laboratories

Our computer laboratories are well-equipped with up-to-date software and hardware to facilitate teaching and learning.Our laboratories are also equipped with the latest hardware and software, including Apple Macintosh, Linux and Windows-based computers.
 

Specialized Labs and Library IT facilities

In addition to the 2 main computer centers, there are 4 other specialized computer learning laboratories on campus such as the Integrated Language Lab, Performance and Media Lab, Network Lab, Telecommunications and Multimedia Labs.
 
In the Library Multimedia Zone, more than 100 units of public PCs are open for students’ usage. WiFi internet access is also available in the Library area.
 
Hospitality and Tourism Facilities
 

Students will enjoy creating gastronomical delights in our three different culinary kitchens for production, preparation and pastry. We also have a mock-up housekeeping suite, a five-star training restaurant, a delicatessen and a fully functional travel bureau to enable acquisition of knowledge and development of practical skills required by the industry.

Accommodation

Sunway University campus is strategically located in the modern and well-planned township of Bandar Sunway. The township has excellent infrastructure ranging from family-friendly attractions such as theme parks, shopping malls, cinemas and restaurants to amenities such as medical centres and banks. Sunway University offers various types of excellent on-campus accommodation, with priority given to outstation and international students. All hostel units are a mere 5-minute walk from everything you need at Sunway University.

 


Sunway Monash Residence

Sunway Monash Residence
Beyond just accommodations, Sunway Monash Residence (SMR) is a hub for students of various nationalities to experience an independent lifestyle in a residence with premium facilities and service surpassing that of private accommodations.
 
Students will have the option of staying in either Tower A, with 8 single rooms per unit, or Tower B, which is made up of ensuite (duplex) units, each with 5 single rooms with attached bathrooms. Ample space is available as SMR is able to house up to more than 2,000 residents.
 
Connected via a specially-built link bridge, SMR is within a 3-minutes walk away from Monash University Sunway campus. Sunway University/Sunway College is located 10 minutes away. With an emphasis on students’ convenience and safety, a “one-touch” entry and exit system via card access is implemented.
 
Residents enjoy best of both worlds: “on-campus” convenience and safety, and “off-campus” active and sporty lifestyle, with resident access to the gymnasium, swimming pool, basketball court and multipurpose hall equipped for indoor badminton and table tennis. As it is across all our residences, 24-hour security is provided by a dedicated and professionally trained team.
 
Residents can organize parties in the BBQ and picnic area, or go for daily walks in the parcourse area. There is also a service launderette and a convenience store ensuring most of the basic amenities are available in-house. Residents also enjoy the comfort and privacy of a room complete with air-conditioning and flat-screen TV for their entertainment needs. Individual food storage space is also available for residents to organize their own food items in the unit’s pantry. The modern and cosy cafe located on the ground floor serves as the residents’ regular eatery and hang-out spot.

Sun U Residence
Sun-U Residence is the accommodation of choice for students of all nationalities wanting to experience a ‘preview’ of being a young adult living in a condo environment. Residents will have the option of staying in a Single or Twin-sharing room, with 7 residents to a unit (3 twin-sharing and 1 single room).
 
Just a 3-minute walk away from Sunway University/Sunway College and 7 minutes from Monash University Sunway campus, Sun-U Residence is not just an accommodation but also a safe place for its residents to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. Besides 24-hour security surveillance and patrol, numerous sporting facilities are also available. From squash to badminton, or from swimming to football, residents can find facilities provided for their favorite sports either on the accommodation itself or a short walk away on the Sunway University/Sunway College’s sports field.
 
There is no need to worry regarding access to the Internet as residents can remain connected via the Wi-Fi enabled study rooms or in the comfort of their own unit via wired port for their studies and research purposes or just for leisure. Residents have the option of doing their own laundry using the washing machine available in their units or just head to the launderette downstairs. Meals are convenient as the scenic Poolside Café dishes up a large variety of food to suit the tastes of the various nationalities in Sun-U Residence.

Sun U Apartment
Sun-U Apartment, located behind the Sunway University/Sunway College main campus, has been for years the home of students for its convenience, affordability and safety.
 
Residents of Sun-U Apartment will have the option of choosing from staying in a twin-sharing or four-sharing room (with choice between near window and near door). The apartment unit consists of 2 twin-sharing rooms and 1 four-sharing (8 residents per unit).
 
Just a short 3-minute walk away from the Sunway University/Sunway College campus and 10 minutes from Monash University Sunway campus, Sun-U Apartment boasts 24-hour security surveillance and patrol. Facilities include study room with Wi-Fi internet access, badminton court, BBQ pit and open picnic area, parcourse as well as a launderette (coin-operated).
 
Residents can look forward to various activities after a long day of classes; be it a winding-down walk at the parcourse, a chat over food at the BBQ and picnic area, sporting activities such as badminton, or even for more studying over at the study rooms.
