    The scope of activities in bioinformatics encompasses all aspects of gathering, storing, handling, analysing, interpretating and transmission of vast amounts of biological information. It finds applications in a wide range of industries such as the health care industry, the pharmaceutical industry, agriculture and environmental management. These applications include discovery of new drugs and vaccines, development of molecular diagnostic kits, development of new gene products, personalised and preventive medicine, crop improvement and evolutionary studies. This area of science is dynamic and evolving, representing one of the most rapidly growing and challenging area in science and technology.

    A wide range of research areas fall within the scope of bioinformatics including:
    * Sequence assembly
    * Database design and maintenance
    * Sequence (gene) analysis
    * Proteomics
    * Drug discovery
    * Genome assembly
    * Gene finding
    * Protein structure alignment
    * Protein structure prediction
    * Prediction of gene expression and protein-protein interactions
    * Modelling of evolution and etc
